According to sources, the agreement between General Electric and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will involve an 80 percent transfer of aircraft engine technology by value.
However, neither country has yet to make an official announcement. The Indian government will presumably make an official announcement during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit.
India-US fighter jet engine collaboration
According to sources, the transaction could be worth $7 billion; however, both parties are currently negotiating payment mechanisms, machinery acquisition, and technology transfer. According to the sources, the United States has never shared its engine technology in such a comprehensive manner with another nation.
This level of technology transfer has never been provided by the United States, the United Kingdom, or France to any country, the source added.
India and HAL will receive GE aircraft engines that feature a special coating for erosion and corrosion, restoration technology for turbine, compression disc and blades, and coating and machining of single crystal turbine blades.
GE and HAL will commence working together on jet engine production as soon as the agreement is ratified. It is anticipated that the transfer of technology will occur in segments, with 80 percent of the engine’s value added in India within three years.
